I was watching a quiz show on TV the other night (similar to mastermind), and the contestant's specialty was the Pacific air war.
I didn't record it, but there was a question about the Corsair, and I'm almost certain the quizmaster referred to WHISPERING death.
I thought that the Corsair was WHISTLING death, and the Bristol Beaufighter was WHISPERING death (supposedly due to quieter sleeve-valve engines).

Anyone know any better ?

I think you got it right and the quizmaster got it wrong!
