I came across the patent for the R2800-32W "sidewinder" supercharger arrangement recently. Makes interesting reading.
The number is US 2,667,298 and the title is, "Arrangement of Opposed Superchargers". (Five very nice drawings) It can be downloaded free from the uspto.gov website.
The patent spends a lot time describing how the shafting of the two impellers is arranged so that lateral expansion of the engine is accomodated.
