Stratus engines are converted from Subaru automobile engines and are built and marketed by Stratus 2000, Inc. of Camano Island, Washington. Stratus sells their engines to builders of experimental aircraft. Stratus was founded in 1992 by Reiner and Petra Hoffmann. Ownership was transferred to Mykal Templeman in 1999 and the firm was reorganized as Stratus 2000, Inc. All Stratus Subaru conversions require reduction of propeller rpm from that of engine rpm; i.e., a Propeller Speed Reduction Unit (PSRU). The PSRU used, which was engineered specifically for Stratus, incorporates an HD belt-drive system and is marketed separately to individuals and other firms converting Subaru engines for aircraft. Most of the information here has been compiled from the Stratus Website as well as "Kitplanes" (KP) and "Sport Aviation" (SA) magazines. All of these Stratus engines are non-certificated engines for use in experimental, homebuilt aircraft.
