The Jane's All the World's Aircraft annuals were the initial source for this compilation. The 1995-96 Edition was the last one that gives complete information on aircraft engines. Subsequent editions give basic specifications for all engines that are mentioned for the aircraft described in the main text, but no further details. The 1912, 1941, 1942, and most editions of Jane's AWA from 1945-1946 to the present have been consulted. Jane's currently publishes separate aeroengine information, edited by Bill Gunston, but it contains information on gas turbine engines only.
As this investigation proceeded, most of the 23 volumes entitled Aircraft Engines of the World have been consulted in detail. Paul H. Wilkinson compiled and published these more or less annually between 1941 and 1970. Another useful source is the annual Aircraft Yearbooks published in the US. However, only those AY volumes listed below have been consulted at this time.
The Aerosphere annuals compiled by Glenn D. Angle were published in, at least, 1939 and 1941 through 1943. Angle was an experienced engine designer. The 1939 edition is remarkable for its extensive coverage, by Angle, of international engine development from the dawn of flight until about January 1940. The aircraft engine section of the 1939 edition of Aerosphere has been scanned and is available on a CD from Weak Force Press. The 1939 volume had its 1st Printing in March 1940. The last US engine Type Certificate listed there is No. 218, the Wright Duplex Cyclone (GR-3350-A2), granted on 12/15/39.
The books about piston aero engines of all types by Herschel Smith (S) and Bill Gunston (BGP) were extremely useful and are recommended for their breadth of information. The encyclopedia of aero engines by Bill Gunston (BGE) also was very important and is recommended.
An interesting discussion on horizontally-opposed engines built before 1920 is contained in E. Charles Vivian's book A History of Aeronautics. His Part IV, Chapter 5 is on HOAE, specifically, and the entire book is available online as an e-book.
The sources for the aircraft applications are the Jane's, Aerosphere, and Aircraft Yearbook volumes; the Fahey books; and other published sources. The "Journals of the American Aviation Historical Society" (AAHS) have been useful. The lists of applications are by no means complete and, for now, are limited mostly to US-built aircraft. For all of the aircraft in the sequential Approved Type Certificates through TC = 817, the source is the late Joseph Juptner's nine-volume series (J1 to J9). It should be noted that the FAA TCDS Website has FAA Type Certificate Data Sheets (TCDS) with extensive data on engines, aircraft, and propellers. Finally, the compilations managed by K O Eckland on the Aerofiles Website have listings of the engines used by each US aircraft type. These very complete listings of US-designed and US-built aircraft have been used extensively here and are highly recommended to anyone interested in any aspect of aircraft and aviation in the US.
No attempt has been made yet to include those aircraft applications for which Supplemental Type Certificates (STC) for alternative engine installations have been approved. These STCs apply to the modification of a production aircraft with an ATC to configurations for which certificates were not obtained by the original manufacturer. STCs may be held by individuals or companies, so long as they meet FAA approval standards. They can be found on the FAA STC Site.
