Preceptor engines are Volkswagen auto engines converted to full VW and 1/2 VW aircraft engines by Preceptor Aircraft Corp. of Rutherfordton, North Carolina. Preceptor was formed in 1991 when Bob Counts, the designer in the mid-1980's of the N3 Pup light aircraft built by Nostalgair and later by Mosler Motors, bought the manufacturing rights for the aircraft from Mosler. When TEC, the successor to Mosler, discontinued engine production in 1998, Preceptor began building VW conversions. An article about Preceptor aircraft and engines, KP5/01, provides some of the material below and the rest comes from the Preceptor Website, as copied by the Compiler in November, 2001. The firm is still active building aircraft, but does not seem to be building engines.
