Ital-American Motor Engineering, IAME, KFM (Italy)

IAME KFM engines were built by Ital-American Motor Engineering (IAME) of Zingonia, Italy. The Komet Flight Motors (KFM) name had been used 20 years earlier by Heinz Pollmann (HEPU) of Germany. The relationship between the two firms is unknown to the compiler, but the IAME KFM 112 below has identical dimensions to the Pollmann KFM 40/3500 series. Both engines are believed to be derived from VW auto engines. Similarly, the compiler suggests that the dimensions of the two-stroke KFM 107 below may be the same as those for the Pollmann two-stroke engine. The IAME firm was founded in 1981, principally to serve the US ultralight and lightplane markets. The developer of the IAME engines was Cesare Bossaglia, who died in the mid-1980s. The firm ceased aircraft engine production in 1990. The resultant loss of this source of engines led Jabiru Aircraft of Australia to develop their own family of successful engines. Italmotion, the US IAME Distributor, still has a limited supply of parts.
