Bates, Harroun (US)

The first, second, and fifth Bates engines described here were built by the Bates Engineering Co. of Chicago, Illinois. The firm was founded by Carl S. Bates (1884-1956) in about 1907 and was sold to Heath Aircraft in 1912. Bates also was very active in the early-aviation community in Chicago, see this part of the aerofiles.com Website, this part of the earlyaviators.com Website, and this part of the Early Birds Website. He joined forces in about 1910 with Ray Harroun (1879-1968), the well-known automobile race driver, to build an aircraft and engine. The 24hp engine listed third below was built by Bates and Harroun along with the Bleriot XI-type aircraft listed there. Bates also is reported to have built a water-cooled eight-cylinder engine in about 1915 and the 1924 O-77, the fourth below. The sixth HOAE described here, the Junior, was built by the Bates Motorcraft Co., also of Chicago. The relationship, if any, between the two companies is unknown, but the engines are listed together for convenience, at least.
